Breaking the Silence: A member of Gary Young's Inner Circle Speaks Out
-page3-and Dolly were strict, the children were reprimanded only when they were very disobedient
Donald Young was a school teacher for many years and the parents were very firm about school being a priority in their children's life. Dolly would read to the children and helped with their schoolwork and projects.
Gary was involved in the sports program at school, on the condition he had to keep his grades up, however due to his unruly temper, he was often kept on detention, kicked off the bus several times for hitting other kids and eventually kicked off the team after slugging a teacher in the face.
At the age of fourteen, Gary worked the summer away from the farm and while he was away the family life was a lot more peaceful.
At age of sixteen, Gary asked if he could quit school and work for the forest service cleaning trails, but his parents were insistent that he completed high school, so he was allowed to work away from the ranch only for the summer.
Gary Graduated from Challis High School in 1967 with a 3.0 average. So much for the dis-information that is put out about him never having attending school. He never returned to any formal education.
In 1967 Vietnam was going strong, the draft was in place and many boys from the small town of Challis had been drafted. Donald fearing for Gary, made the mistake of sending him and his oldest sister Nance to live in Canada, so he would not be drafted and again enabling him to duck responsibility. At that time, Gary was eighteen years of age when not sixteen as had been claimed in his YLEO biography.
Now up to this point, the only jobs Gary had held was that of cleaning trails for the Forest Service. Once in Canada he found work logging.
In 1968 at the age of nineteen he married his first wife, a Canadian girl, who helped him acquire 360 acres of land under the homesteading act of British Colombia. He was in desperate need of help to farm the land so his father sold the ranch in Challis and moved to Quesnel B.C.
