In selecting essential oils to reduce stress, it is important that the scent is an enjoyable one. Cinnamon, Cloves, Orange, Lemon, Spearmint and Peppermint can recall wonderful memories that trigger a relaxation response. If, however, there is a bad memory associated with a scent, it will not have a beneficial effect on reducing stress. Euphorics energize the mind and body, increasing self-confidence, joy, and a general feeling of well-being; Black Pepper, Grapefruit, Ginger, Jasmine, Neroli, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Clary Sage, Rose, YlangYlang, and Vanilla are all euphorics. Many of the essential oils from seeds, such as Fennel or Dill, help to calm the digestive system. Mental fatigue is relieved by using Cedar, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Fir, Juniper, Pine, and Spruce. Earthy and woody scents, such as Patchouli, Vetivert and Sandalwood, are grounding. Because the immune system can become overtaxed from prolonged stress, the use of camphoraceous scents, including Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Niaouli, Marjoram and Pine are important. Basil, Clary Sage, Neroli, Rose, and YlangYlang are antidepressants, and Bergamot has been called the oil of anxiety.
Natural remedies are most effective when used consistently. Results may be noticeable in as little as a week, but depending on the severity of the symptoms, may take longer. If there is no improvement after a few weeks, a different set of essential oils can be used, herbal or nutritional supplements added, or advice sought from a qualified health care provider.
